What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask students to name their strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, we discuss what challenges they are having and how their strengths can help overcome these. Then, I come up with a plan for tutoring students.
Each student has unique needs that I cater to with differentiated materials.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. and a K8 teaching certificate. I've been teaching for 10 years now I'm solely focused on tutoring.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with elementary through high school students. I have taught all facets of reading and writing. I'm certified to teach ELA and social studies through 8th grade.
Reading comprehension is paramount in all subjects. In order for that success, students need to have achieved the building blocks of reading. I have in depth experience teaching struggling readers.
I also have experience teaching students with learning disabilities.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Tell the tutor what you need help with and ask how the tutor can help. Ask if the tutor has ever had experience in that area.
