Pears Math Tutoring
About
I am a physics student at Florida State University on a full Bright Futures scholarship, and I have been a private math tutor for nearly 5 years, I've worked with students from various backgrounds, and have consistently raised not only grades but enthusiasm towards education. I have always felt that public math education was severely lacking, especially in such an amazing subject that has given our society countless advancements, yet to most students it is seen as not only a drag but also not usable in the real world. This could not be further from the truth and I strive to pass on my passion for math and science to students who have grown to resent it.
I started tutoring as a student in high school and quickly discovered that I learned best while also getting to teach others, and consequently I found my passion for education. I have been tutoring non-stop since and plan to continue as long as I can, as I love to help others and seeing the positive change in so many people has helped me live my own fulfilling and positive life.

Frequently asked questions
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated one year early from High School with a 6.8 GPA and the full Bright Futures scholarship, as well as being a member of the KEY club, the National Society of High School Scholars, student government, the Cambridge program, and two varsity sports.
I am now an upper-level student at Florida State University as a physics major with a concentration in astrophysics and a math minor. Next year I plan to pursue a graduate degree in nuclear engineering.
I started tutoring math and general education in 2016 and continued working with multiple students until 2020, where due to the pandemic I switched to Zoom tutoring. The transition to Zoom has been a significant success and has proven to be similarly effective to in-person tutoring.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many different students including students who were failing courses and were in desperate need of help, as well as those who simply wanted to further bolster their education.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Math is often taught poorly in middle and high school, with the lowest average success rate, and the most likely class to cause a student to be held back.
Math is a language that requires lots of practice and attention to detail. In a classroom setting, with colleges requiring more every year from students, there is rarely enough time for teachers to help every student and many questions go by the wayside as students decide it will be easier to receive poor grades or cheat.
One-on-one math tutoring is very effective at helping students fully understand mathematical topics and apply them to things outside of the classroom, as well as opening students up to potential in STEM fields.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
You should always communicate your needs to your teacher regardless of whether you answered yes or no to these questions.
Did I take notes? (If not, should I have?)
Did I listen to what the teacher was saying?
Can I repeat a sentence or a topic?
Can I explain the concept to a friend?
Can I make a question based on the content?
Will reading the book help me understand the content better?
