Frequently asked questions

I like to learn a bit about the student, her/his concerns about the subject and any particular objectives they may have. I try to leave the student feeling confident that I truly will help them.

I've over a dozen years of effective tutoring in all High School math subjects including pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, AP, SAT/ACT and College algebra/calculus.

Depends on the course level.
It seems like forever. I have always tutored my friends, classmates and others.
All types of students from those with math anxiety, learning difficulties, ADHD, GED prep, College level and those who need a "refresher."
I had a student who was picked on and badly bullied and made to think he was a loser. His prades plummeted and his math grade was a 1.5 It took 6 months to convince him that the actual losers were his bullies and not him. He began to be receptive to math tutoring and his confidence level greatly increased. His overall GPA began to improve and his math grade shot up. What I found particularly gratifying is that he began to mentor other kids who also were being bullied. At the end of the school year he received the most improved student award. I was proud of his achievement- he had graduated from High School and had learned how to deal with bullies.
I think it's important to be able to develop a good rapport with the tutor so you feel confident they can help you. Having the tutor provide the first lesson for free is useful in this respect.
It is helpful to have a list of the areas you need help with if not the entire course. This will allow the tutor to focus on your area of difficulty.
