Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
You have to determine the level of mathematics the student is operating in cluding the weaknesses and strengths in order to move forward the student must correct his weaknesses
Tutoring Techniques:
First, I watch the student solve the problem and then we discuss any mistakes. The key is not just to identify and correct the mistake but identify the reason which is the actual cause of the mistake. Does the student not know how to do the problem? Does the student have the required prerequisite knowledge ? What type of error did the student make? As an experienced teacher. I have learned to identify common student errors and how to correct them. What is the student’s attitude about math? Do they have a fear of math? What is their past experience in their math classes?
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master's degree in mathematics education plus 30 additional hours and math and statistics. Chair person on a committee to investigate math software programs to help students in beginning and intermediate algebra.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
35.00 per hour
How did you get started teaching?
I enjoyed learning about math in high School and it was natural for me to want to help others in the subject. I had to choose between a major in engineering or a math degree. I had more of an internal desire to teach so I choose to major in math education.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all levels of students from basic math though calculus 3. I have taught students with various disabilities including a student having cerebral palsy to a student who had major paralysis. Both students through effort of their own as well as my effort to tutor them passed the course.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
