Elizabeth Meisenzahl, English And Brit Lit Tutor

About

I firmly believe that all individuals are capable of learning and deserving of an education. I believe in personalized strategies for both students and their parents to support, develop, and grow knowledge and understanding in conjunction with their primary curriculum.

I believe that in teaching you learn twice. I also believe that learning is not labor when it is fueled by a student's passions. There is nothing I love more than watching a student light up with that "I get it" moment when the lesson finally clicks into place.

Frequently asked questions

I like to meet with both the student and the parent(s) and develop a plan for all of us. I like for the student and parent(s) to come with the syllabi or assignments from the teacher, so that I can determine the best course to keep our shared student in-line with the course work, and flourish with individualized learning. It is important to me that learning does not stop after our tutoring sessions, or when the school day ends. I like to do bi-weekly check-ins with both students and parent(s) about what is working and what is not working, so we can make learning adjustments together. I want the student to leave my sessions confident that they are fully capable of doing the work they find difficult, as well as understanding what it is their primary teacher is seeking from them.

I have been working with students for almost 10 years.

While the bulk of my education has been focused in theatre, I have found that my theatrical background has given me a diverse and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. In my theatre education I have had to pivot from literary analysis to historical research; from absorbing abstract concepts to making those same abstract concepts concrete and kinetic. In theatre, there is a great overlap in critical thinking and direct application of concepts.

My theatre background has also made me an excellent team builder, and has provided me the ability to work collaboratively with others to creatively approach challenges in order to develop actionable steps that result in achieving goals.

I ask for $65.00 per session; each session is 90 minutes in length.

Double Sessions are available (3 hours in length at $130.00/ session), but ask that a student book no more than one Double Session a week.

I was never the best or brightest student. I struggled in school for a long time, until one teacher took an interest in me and my learning. It only ever takes one person to believe in you to turn your life around.

This teacher was the first to explain to me that my learning blocks were not because I was incapable of learning, but rather that I learned and understood things differently-- and that is okay. I strive to figure out exactly how a student learns, and give them the skills to absorb, retain, and apply curriculum in a way that works for them.

"In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn." (Tarzan, 1999) I believe this. I believe that learning is a life-long pursuit, and one of the ways in which I process what I learn is by teaching it to others.

I generally work with High School and Undergraduate students.

I specialize in working with students who, for whatever reason, are having difficulties keeping pace with their peers in the classroom.

I like working with teachers/ parents and students to get the student up to speed with their course work, and give students the confidence they need so that they may complete the course work assigned to them.

The advice I would give to students looking to hire a tutor is trust your instinct. You want someone who will understand the learning support you need, who will believe in you; you want someone you can trust, and you want someone who will challenge you to extend your thinking beyond "just getting through it." You want someone who will engage with you, and make the learning process enjoyable.
