About this tutor

I am a dedicated, patient and creative educator with over 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience in the Washington D.C. area. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and I am licensed to teach K-6.
Most of my teaching has been with elementary and middle school learners. I am highly skilled in English Language Arts for all levels, including high school, and specialize in literacy intervention. I also have expertise in teaching math, science and social studies. In addition to classroom teaching and academic tutoring, I have extensive experience teaching hands-on, project-based and art-based lessons as well as teaching social-emotional skills.
I tailor tutoring sessions to each learner's unique learning styles, interests, needs and strengths. I am passionate about helping learners build their self-confidence and finding creative ways to make learning fun and relevant. It's important to me to take time to get to know learners during our sessions so they feel comfortable and so I can most effectively meet their needs.

I have always loved connecting with kids and, as a life-long learner, I have always loved being part of their learning processes. Witnessing their growth is deeply exciting and crafting curricula to meet each learner's complex combination of needs is a fun creative challenge. I am always learning more, finding new ways to teach or learn a concept, and striving to make learning an enriching and engaging experience. I truly enjoy building relationships with young people and helping them build skills and mindsets that will make them successful not only in school but in life.

Mia was fabulous tutoring our daughter. Our daughter is shy and can be intimidated by math. Mia was able to connect with her and demystify math. She came prepared for each session with activities and she communicated with our daughter's teacher to be sure they were working on areas where she had gaps. I wholeheartedly recommend Mia!

My kid went from lacking confidence in Math, getting Cs, and saying she hated Math, to becoming an A student who won awards at her school. Mia didn't just focus on the hard skills required, she also worked through some of the confidence issues my kid was encountering as well.

Mia is an excellent tutor, and a pleasure to work with. She has worked with our 13 year old son for two years on both reading/writing and math, supplementing what he gets from school. Mia is caring and attentive to his needs and our requests - always communicating with us clearly on what she wants to do and adapting based on how Caleb is responding to a given approach. Our son has learned a ton from her - on several occasions he has lit up after a school math class with a big smile, telling us that he finally understood a difficult concept like fractions because of the help Mia has given him. Thanks in large part to Mia he moved his math grade up from a C to an A!

Very easy to communicate and schedule with. Personalized attention and customized strategies. An energetic and encouraging rapport that is extremely relatable for students. Focus on the social and emotional aspects that support literacy confidence. My daughter saw increased fluency after 3 months of weekly tutoring. I learned new tactics for reading together and ways to encourage her. A pleasure to work with.
