About this tutor

First, I have been an educator for over 15 years with at least 9 years of formal class instruction in the DC area.  I have a BS in Chemistry from Lincoln University graduating Magna cum laude class of 1995.

We pride ourselves in understanding first who the person is and then pinpointing their difficiencies.  This is done through a combination of interpersonal conversations and a formal preassessment.  Because of various learning styles my instruction can be differentiated to maximize the student’s ability to process concepts. Also, a great portion of tutoring work will be fashioned according to the student’s current learning institution which will maintain some level of continuity with coursework material and style.

The most rewarding aspect of this work is actually seeing the understanding in the eyes of my students.  Also, when I follow up to see continued success well after I’m done with them. My ultimate goal is for them to understand who they are and how they learn and to make myself obsolete.  Independence from me is my ultimate goal!!!

Derek is an outstanding tutor!! He has tutored my daughter in chemistry, algebra and physics during 9th & 10th grade; she is now a junior. Because of Derek, our daughter not only understood both her classwork and homework, but she also did very well on her exams for the courses she was tutored in by Derek. He knows the subject matter through and through and has an amazing and strong command of the content (physics, algebra and chemistry)!! He is dedicated, committed and always prepared. Derek also makes the student feel confident and comfortable in their work. I highly recommend Derek Moore and will be using his services again.

I was always tutoring for one person or another and one day my sister in law presented an opportunity for me to teach at a prominent charter school in DC.  That’s were much of my formal teacher training came from in that they extensively required professional developments to sharpen our craft.  This was necessary because my degree was in Chemistry and not in education so much of the pedagogy was introduced within this organization.
