Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I find out what level of math the student is comfortable with and what level of math the student needs to be able to perform at. I prefer not to accept students who have too large of a knowledge gap between ability and necessity as it is detrimental to the learning process. As long as the gap is manageable, I can tailor specific exercises to improve understanding and help the student progress.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My Associates degree is for general math/science studies and the school I attended offered me a position tutoring other students because my grades were exceptional.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide range of students and as long as the student is putting in the effort to make progress I will do everything in my power to help them succeed.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't let the teacher coddle you. They get paid regardless if you pass or fail. You have expectations to meet for tests and no amount of coddling will prepare you for that. The more work you are willing to put into your own education, the more effort a teacher is willing to put into helping you achieve your goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should know roughly what skill sets they are struggling with and be ready to ask as many questions as necessary to close those knowledge gaps.
