Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I work hard to learn about my students and find out what I can do to help them reach their educational goals. If a student is not understanding a concept, I will approach the concept in a diffferent way to differentiate instruction.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master's degree in Reading and Elementary Education. I have an EdS in Technology in Schools. I am a Colorado certified teacher in K-6 Education, 7-12 English/LA and K-12 School Librarian. I am also a licensed Principal.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $40.00 per hour for tutoring. This time includes 55 minutes of tutoring and 5 minutes for scheduling and answering general questions.
How did you get started teaching?
When I was fresh out of college with a communications degree I ended up with a job as a receptionist. Very quickly I decided I wanted to give back and to support the success of students in school. That was 23 years ago.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all age levels from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. I have worked with gifted students, special education students. I have a lot of experience working with at-risk students and helping remedial students improve their skills.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently worked with a student who is an English speaker, but has a first grade reading level and is in the 10th grade. His schooling only started a few years ago. We did an interest inventory to get an idea of where he struggles and excels with reading. Through some one-on-one tutoring and listening to him read aloud I bagan to see where the holes where in his reading instruction. I have many resources to use to help students be successful with reading.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Advocate for yourself. If you know or think you need help in reading, then tell someone. There is nothing wrong with needing help. I can help you be successful and go on to acheive your educational and life goals.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It is very helpful, if the student can answer the following questions... Do you like to read? Do you like to write? What areas of reading would you like help with or are you willing to explore your needs together.
