Hi! Probably, the only skill I’m more confident in myself besides math, is my ability to communicate with younger generations. It’s true, I’ve won math awards (from elementary school on), graduated with my Accounting BS with a minor in Human Resources; but my lifelong work around children is my natural gift. Starting in church, their daycare programs, along with assistant coaching with my father, caring for my three siblings while both parents worked, lifeguarding (with co-guards all 5+ yrs younger, watching hundreds of children at once), worked as an EMT FTO (field training officer), and nannying (20yrs); I feel that working around children has given me that always inspiring burst of inspiration, and daily beautiful reminders (as an adult) to take life with more positive curiosity, over other big emotional reaction options. I have always been that person who could hang out with teens and kids and (given the situations, teach them through helping with their homework or help littles learn more about a new food - enough to try it! etc). While since becoming an adult, have found it increasingly difficult to engage with other adults in the same lively conversationally-way. Thus, why I ended up taking so many additional communications course in college; that I accidentally minored in Business Human Resources. It is my belief that life is meant to live and to learn; and cycle between those two actions, continuously and without end. In my personal childhood struggles in figuring out school and how to learn (the 90’s was such a different time), I am confident that your child or teen will not help but pick up my (semi-obnoxious) super positive there’s always a way attitude. Picture this: you hear me repeating over and over again, “you can do this - Let’s just break it down into smaller portions” & “it’s okay that this is difficult, we can chip away at this skill/problem set/tackled a fear/etc..”. My goals for working with your teen or child includes introducing my bright learning attitude, empowering each to find their own pace & peace in learning tough topics and gifting them with the want to learn more. There is no perfect student, but there is a perfect student’s attitude. Covid made everything slow down and caused many to fall sick and become tremendously stressed out. Having graduated college in the middle of Covid, I felt the shift. School has become a thing of have tos, and stressful assignments, less time with teachers, and all at such young important times for their young minds. Math is my fun subject. Now sure I love art and history and Pe so deeply as well. But math will forever and always be my source for mental stimulation. Please, allow me to show your teen or child how amazing and wonderful math is; from metaphors, to sciencey applications, to my (currently studying for my CPA exams) tax code examples. I have always brought metaphors into the classroom, as I was growing up: I just naturally was curious enough to always ask super off-the-wall type questions, that would confuse everyone, but the teachers!! Somehow, I have retained that bright curiosity and trying ability to associate everything with everything. Allow me to try to instill this open minded thinking into your child’s school curriculum, while tutoring them in their math. Allow me to use metaphors to turn those new math problems into various mind experiments.
