Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with students, I always want to let them know that this is a learning process. I inquire as to which part they are having difficulties with and evaluate them as we go along.
Sometimes it's how the material is being presented, and finding out how your child learns, is key to their success.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm currently a substitute teacher for District 49 and have been able to adjust my teaching style to fit various classrooms and grade levels.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard price is $25 hourly.
If you are a military family (Active, Reserves, National Guard or Veteran) $20 hourly. Must show proof.
How did you get started teaching?
I started out as a youth minister, and then moved towards ESL for refugees, Adult Special Education, teacher assistant, and finally to substitute teaching.
I was about to take the PRAXIS(teaching credential test) when the pandemic hit.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a variety of students from pre-k to seniors. ESL- from various countries around the world and in Special Education.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Prior to the pandemic, I was subbing all throughout District 49. The first event(s) I am most fond of is when multiple teachers would request me back, as their students wanted me to sub for them again.
The second event(s) is when certain schools would request me on a daily or weekly basis.
Being told that I did a great job and that the students enjoyed having me there, is the best feeling.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who wants to see you succeed. Who gets to know you and how you learn.
A teacher shouldn't be dictating a lesson plan, but rather, help you fall in love with learning.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. Where am I struggling?
2. Is it how it's being taught or the lesson itself?
3. Should I get extra assistance?
4. How much time should I give to areas that I'm struggling in?
5. Does my teacher provide extra resources, either online or in person?
