About

Hi, I'm Maya! I am a senior at Cedar Falls High School and on my way to college in a few months. I have maintained above a 4. 0 GPA throughout high school, and taken a variety of math, science, and engineering classes. I also received a 32 on the ACT and am currently working with one student on test prep. Previously, I worked with a 2nd grader on math and reading, but I also have lots of experience peer tutoring students my own age as well. Because I am still in high school, I have a different insight into students' minds, as opposed to a college student. I have lots of learning techniques and study strategies that I am eager to share!

Working with Maya for ACT prep has been very helpful and very refreshing from other tutors I have had. Not only does she come prepared with specific things to study but she sets up a whole folder documenting things to review. In the folder she writes down past scores, formulas needed for the ACT. She is the most responsible and “on it” tutor I know. Maya is very insightful as well on techniques that are small but can boost your score a lot. For example, knowing your formulas, calculator techniques and speed reading. Maya has not only helped me with the material, but also motivated me to study! I am so grateful for her!

    Frequently asked questions

My process is different for every student depending on their personality and the subject matter. Once I familiarize myself with their material, I begin to ask questions in order to find out where they are having trouble. After identifying what they are struggling with, I either work through examples with them and explain as I go, or sometimes I will utilize secondary resources. As we progress, it becomes easier for me to figure out the best way that I can help the student, and we work until the student feels comfortable with the material.

I am currently a senior in high school, so I have the same perspective as many students. This gives me an advantage because I know how teenagers think, so I can explain concepts in terms they will understand. I have worked as a peer tutor for several kids at my school, along with at the UNI-CUE over the last few years. Because of these experiences, I am comfortable and confident working with any type of student. Another advantage of being in high school is that it has not been very long since I myself took these classes. With a 4.06 GPA, I am comfortable with most of the material taught and able to explain it to others. Since it is fresh in my mind, I spend less time trying to orient myself with the information.

I have always been one of the top students in my class and therefore I was always the person people went to for help. When explaining things to other students, I get a sense of pride and it feels good to know that I can help them understand something they might not have gotten on their own. Throughout my middle and high school years, I became used to helping others and noticed how much I really enjoyed teaching.

I have experience with a wide variety of students. I am currently mentoring a 1st grader, I tutored a second grader in math, reading and spelling, and I have worked with multipul high school students on a variety of subjects.

Although a degree in science or math can be eye catching, it does not matter how much information a person is fluent with if they do not know how to communicate it effectively. You can be the smartest person in the world, but if you can not communicate your knowledge with others, you will be a terrible teacher. Look for somebody who is not only fluent in the subject matter, but will also take time to adjust teaching strategies to the individual’s needs, such as myself.
