Arthur Tutoring
About
My name is Ronan. I have a PhD from Stanford in infectious diseases and environmental science (I use applied mathematical biology techniques) and have been tutoring in a variety of subjects of school-age kids from 6-18 since 2006.
My style is very much to join the student at their level from their point of view and explore the possibilities and ways forward together. So this is not very teacher-like, it's more collaborative.
As a collaborator, I ask the student questions:
What are we trying to do? How should we start? What do we know already?
I find this approach leads to higher retention of material and higher self-confidence. It can even feel a lot like a puzzle. Math can be really fun. I don't believe that some people are good at it and others are not. All can learn all levels of math, and I'm really good at helping in that process.
I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't get a huge joy from seeing students learn, advance, and do well. I have one student who I tutored through four years of high school. Seeing his growth and development and being a part of that was highly rewarding.
