About

I have over a decade of experience teaching college-level mathematics to students from a plethora of backgrounds and learning styles. I'm passionate about helping students find the beauty (and utility) in math, and that's what makes me such an effective instructor. I have experience teaching online, and am highly proficient at video conferencing, virtual whiteboards, mathematics visualization software, etc.

I truly enjoy watching students develop mathematical confidence and fluency.

Kristen is extremely knowledgeable and very easy to communicate with. My son needed occasional help with some topics and she was always ready to answer any questions he might have. He felt much more confident preparing for the tests and improved his grade from C to A.

I reached out to Kristen with von Becker Mathematics to help my son who was really struggling with Math in High school. She started working with him and applied patience, encouragement and changed his attitude towards Math completely. From a person who highly disliked Math and was extremely anxious, he changed into a confident student with a firm grasp on the material. Kristen thought him to think and be consequential in his thinking. She is extremely patient and knowledgeable teacher, who teaches her students to think independently and critically. This is a quote from my son: Ms. Kristen really helped me understand better Math from the beginning of my High school. Had it not been for Ms. Kristen, I dont know how my grades wouldve been right now. I am so grateful for her patience and helpful and encouraging attitude towards my struggles in IM. I highly recommend Kristen with von Becker Mathematics as an excellent teacher and tutor in Mathematics.

Kristen is tutoring my 11th grader in pre-calc honors. She has a calm, non-threatening approach, and in 3 weeks my daughters grade has improved from a C to a B. She looks forward to the sessions and she is now able to participate effectively in the small work group format of the classroom. I recommend Kristen wholeheartedly.

Frequently asked questions

It's very important for me to get to know a student's learning styles and needs before jumping into tutoring, so I provide new clients a FREE 30-minute online consultation.

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics (2011) from the University of Texas at Arlington, and since then I've held faculty positions at the University of Arizona and Saint Mary's College of California. I'm also trained in inquiry-based learning and am familiar with accessibility standards.

My pricing depends on the type (online vs. in-person) and frequency of tutoring, but can be as low as $50/hr. Please reach out to me for details!

I've been teaching since high school, when I started my very first job at Emler Swim School. For many years, I taught private and group swim lessons to children as young as 6 months old. In college, I continued this practice by teaching swim-for-fitness and water aerobics classes. When it was time to start thinking about my career options in graduate school, teaching was the obvious choice!

Many! As a graduate student, I worked with a lot of non-traditional students (adults who took evening classes to finish up their college degree requirements). In my university and college faculty roles, I worked with primarily "traditional" college students, many of whom were either first-generation or Latinx. I now tutor primarily high school and college students. I also have a lot of experience working with students having (learning) disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, and blindness.

Every student that I've worked with has grown a new appreciation for mathematics, and that's definitely something I'm fond (and proud) of.
You don't really understand a concept until you've taught to a bunch of confused students a few times. It's very important to hire a tutor with lots of classroom experience!
What are your goals for tutoring? (Improved grades follow from improved understanding...) How much time are you willing to invest? (Meeting with a tutor once a week might not be sufficient...)
