I was a computer science major in college. I have done substitute teaching 2-3 times per week since 2003, helping thousands of kids in that time, especially in math which was always my strong area. On the SATs, I got at 740 out of the 800 on the math section. I also tutor in public speaking skills so the one-on-one setting is familiar to me.
There's a wonderful satisfaction in the look or expression of "I get it now!" that makes me love what I do.
Milo Shapiro is a very excellent tutor. He helped my high school daughter overcome some difficult problems she was having in math. He is very professional and easy to communicate with as well. I highly recommend his services to anyone who may be seeking extra help.
When my son was struggling a couple of years ago, Mr. Milo worked with him on both his writing and his math. He seemed to get through to my son in a way that his teachers my husband and I couldn’t. Equally important, my son seemed more open to learning in the tutoring mode with Mr. Milo’s patient style. I know it helped at the time, both with my son’s grades and his confidence. I'm happy to say that my son starts college next month – something we dreamed of when just passing his high school classes was rough for a while. I can definitely recommend Mr. Milo as the extra boost so many of our kids need.
Mr. Milo substituted in my classroom many times. He is effective and the kids warm to him quickly. Part of my classroom structure is to have small groups work with me (or my sub). The students were always thrilled to hear Mr. Milo would be there in my absence. I have no doubt Mr. Milo will be wonderful in a one-on-one setting since he was effective with my diverse group while maintaining a positive rapport with all of my students.
Mr. Milo worked with my daughter, Katie, a number of years ago when she needed a little extra support. She’s doing great now in college and I know that the confidence boost she got from working with Mr. Milo helped her in the years that middle school and high school years that followed their efforts. I'd highly recommend him.
I have him/her share with me what he has been doing, what he feels he CAN handle, and then begin introducing new problems that step up from there, not moving on until there's a sense of mastery of the second step.
15+ years substitute teaching in four districts (San Diego Unified, South Bay Unified, Chula Vista Elementary, and San Ysidro)
$75/hr if I come to you.
$65 if you come to my home, but the parent must stay in that case.
I applied for substitute teaching to make extra money long ago and just never stopped! had already done work with kids in theatre afterschool programs.
Don't settle on the first one. How much s/he likes the person will influence how much effort s/he puts into it!
