Sara Connor's English Literature, Writing, And Humanities Tutoring

I've received significant positive feedback regarding my patience, thoughtful observations and comments, and thorough understanding of language as a tutor. I am open-minded and non-judgemental, and excel at working through difficult academic language to get to the heart of a given subject. I also work hard to provide my students with the tools they need to understand their assignments, effectively analyze their readings, develop a clear, effective thesis, and trust their own instincts and emotions as a starting point for learning.

I have primarily informal experience tutoring at a high school and college level in my high school's after school program, as well as some formal experience through other online tutoring platforms. I also have experience as a volunteer assistant editor with the online publication OUTSIDER Magazine. Although editing and tutoring definitely require different skillsets, this is an experience which has helped me understand how to offer constructive feedback, organize written information clearly and understand what makes an effective argument.

For one, I have a tremendous passion for language. I was encouraged to read voraciously from childhood, and my house was filled with great books, from William Faulkner to Plato to C.S. Lewis. This gave me the incredible opportunity to explore strange, new worlds and learn to appreciate a well-used turn of phrase. I also love to learn and help other students learn about the world, with a particular focus on the humanities--history, sociology, ethnic studies, gender studies, and philosophy. I even majored in Women and Gender Studies while in college, and still have a tremendous passion for the field. Ultimately, I believe firmly in the importance of excellent, accessible education and consider it a privilege to be able to give back to the world by helping students learn more and more effectively.
