First, a pretest or a placement test needs to be administered. This may include a written as well as an oral assessment. Based on the student's performance and needs, then, a working syllabus will be developed which entails, among other areas, the language skills, grammar and vocabulary in a communicative context.

My main education and training is in the area of teaching English as a second/foreign language with a master's degree which gradually developed through years and led to fruitful experience in teaching other languages.

How did you get started teaching?
I developed a passion for teaching when I was a high school student. For me teaching was, and still is, a way of helping learners to prepare for their future. I enjoy working with students so that they can materialize their short term and long term dreams through the process of learning. Learning ,as some psychologists say, is a change in behavior. For me this change is really important because it can lead to trhe biggest changes in human life. That's why and how I got started teaching. Also, I like to make this process of positive change as enjoyable and effective as possible.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from different age groups ranging from elementary to high school. Over the course of 17 years I also worked with university students both at undergraduate and graduate levels. I helped prepare learners for academic tests. Still I have been able to help people from different walks of life achieve their learning goals for different purposes.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for two important factors of experience and expertise. None of these is complete without the other one. Experience in teaching languages draws from the teacher's own perseverance as a former learner, which in turn relates to his/her academic performance or area of expertise. A good teacher is one who has already been an active learner. This is important because this way he can convey the gist and appreciate student's needs from the point of the view of both a teacher and a learner.
