Dack English Tutoring
About
I've been tutoring English since 1998 in a variety of settings, including a college Writing Center, a local college-prep tutoring center, and helping my own teenagers with their English coursework. I have a bachelor's degree in English from California State University Fresno where I graduated as the English Department's Dean's Medalist nominee. I'm a mom of two teenagers and a 20-year-old and enjoy reading, writing, sewing, and going on long walks with my husband. I love tutoring and look forward to working with you or your student.
I have worked primarily with high school and college-age students and I most enjoy the feeling of helping students put their thoughts into writing, understand a piece of literature they felt was inaccessible, and conquer tasks they previously felt they weren't equal to.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I like to find out what the assignment is that they are seeking assistance with. Next, I like to ask what they are most needing help with. I make sure they understand the assignment and break it down into smaller parts, if necessary. From there it depends on what help they are needing, but I do all I can to help them not just complete the assignment, but also feel more capable of completing future assignments.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in English. I've been a tutor in several settings, including a college Writing Center and a college-prep tutoring center. In addition, I've also done some private tutoring. I've had several jobs as an editor, including being a copywriter for an advertising department and being the managing editor of a local magazine.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I first tutored as a college student and have subsequently tutored off and on since then.
What types of students have you worked with?
College English students and high school students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I'd advise students looking for someone to tutor then in English to be sure they are working with someone who has experience. Beyond that I would suggest finding a tutor you feel comfortable with. It should be someone kind, respectful, and knowledgeable.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be clear about what you need help with so that our time together is as focused as possible. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what the assignment is, or if you need help understanding the assignment, make sure you have the description available for me to refer to.
