Riley Build To Better Tutoring
About
Hello there, my name is Melissa! I have my B.A. in Liberal Studies from the University of California, Riverside. I have two years of experience as a teacher's aide, currently am a private tutor, and I am a UCR college peer mentor. I plan to start California State University, Fullerton, in Fall 2021 for my Master's in Education and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential to become an elementary school teacher! Through my experience with students, I recognize that teaching goes beyond simply offering educational discipline and guidance in one or more subject areas. It entails my dedication to the student's individual overall needs. I am skilled in tutoring math, science, language arts, social studies, test-taking strategies, essay writing, and revising. Currently, I am a driven tutor who has always worked with patience, compassion, and communication. I strive first to understand each of my student's pace of learning, and I carefully tailor my teaching to the needs of my students. I take an empathetic and differentiated approach to teaching. I am open to hearing you out, and by acknowledging every student's situation as unique, I will help you visualize concepts and the material in a way that is adapted to your learning pace and overall needs. The motto I tell my students, "Do something today that your future self will thank you for," has always directed them to focus on how impactful their learning and dedication today will be for their future and in all aspects of life. I welcome all students who are passionate about achieving their goals, alongside a tutor who understands the many challenges of academics and who offers accommodating tutoring in areas where you need help.
I love tutoring because I get the chance to work with my students one-on-one. I am fully dedicated to adjusting my methods to fit their unique needs. I offer my full support and I am able to help students discover their full potential, especially considering students commonly do not realize what they are fully capable of. That is where my help comes in. I am passionate about providing a safe space, an understanding ear, and help through lack of motivation. I am here to inspire and encourage self-esteem; I am passionate about reaching that "ah-ha" moment with my students. Working as a tutor, I have learned that to build meaningful, trusting, and positive relationships with my students is a large part of thier ultimate success. I work to teach lessons with a wider, realistic sense of context, so, please join me on this journey together!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
As I begin working with a new student, I start with establishing an initial understanding of our needs. I believe creating a positive and supportive relationship is key to my student's success. Some methods and details I find important to note in our initial meetings would include: getting to know each other, documenting the areas you need help in, discussing your strengths and weaknesses, challenges you may face academically or in general, and the methods you currently use. By establishing where you can improve and what realistic goals we can set, we can move forward with a positive mindset on improvement. Through our journey, I will observe your unique pace of learning and tailor my teaching to ensure I am tutoring at the right speed for you and in a supportive and empathetic manner.
