Miriam's English Tutoring
About
I am a soon-to-be 18-year-old high school graduate and I am excited to help out your high school or middle school student with English tutoring! I have gotten A+'s on both AP English Language and AP English Literature and also scored at the 98th National Percentile on the English Portion of my PSAT. In addition, I was awarded the only Outstanding Student Award by my AP English Literature student out of the 150+ students she teaches in all of her classes for the 2019-2020 school year. I am very passionate about English and have wonderful leadership abilities; I have been in a leadership position in my online school's National English Honors Society for two years; furthermore, I will continue to study English and Literature in college. I am happy to help your middle school or high school student with any English help that they may need.
I enjoy being able to teach one of my favorite subjects and seeing the joys of students learning from it. I most enjoy the work I do when students begin to connect what they're learning to other areas of their lives, especially in relation to characters in literature and literature itself.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing that I do when working with a new student is have them take a short survey and/or activities to figure out what learning style works best for them-visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or reading and writing. Typically students have a dominant combination of at least two learning styles. Once I am able to recognize and see what learning style would work best for them, in addition to finding out the particular aspects of the subject they struggle in, I plan the activities accordingly. To find out what particular aspects they struggle with in the subject, I would also ask them a series of questions. For example, some students may have trouble finding the theme(s) in a piece of literature, while other students may have trouble understanding forming comprehensive thesis statements in essays.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have recently just graduated high school and received numerous academic awards and scholarships. I have received grades of A's and A+'s in both of my AP (college level) English courses and also received The Outstanding Student Award by one of my English teachers out of over 150 students. Additionally, I have scored at the 98th national percentile in the English portion of my PSAT and also the 88th national percentile in the English portion on my ACT. To further my education, I will be studying at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Fall of 2020 and accepted my invitation to join the Honors College there, which only about 5% of accepted students get accepted into.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The standard pricing system that I have is $20-$25/hour, but I am very flexible with that number and can negotiate if need be.
How did you get started teaching?
My Honors American Government and Honors World History teacher recommended to me that I would make a very good tutor/teacher based on my participation in class and my understanding towards others. I figured, "Well, I've informally tutored students before, so why not have it as a part-time job?"
What types of students have you worked with?
Overall, I am very new to the process of formal tutoring; however, I have tutored many students before informally in English and other subjects.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would first make sure the teacher offers a price that you can afford, and that that tutor has considerable knowledge in regards to their area of expertise and has credentials to prove it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Some of the questions that students should think through before talking to teachers about their needs is 1) What particular aspect of the subject do I struggle with? Is it grammar? Analyzing theme in a piece of literature? Writing essays? I'd recommend that students do a short reflection of themselves and what particular area they struggle with before talking to the teacher about their specific needs. A second question that I believe students should think about is 2) How best do I learn? Do I learn best through reading or writing? Or I learn best through listening and auditory? These questions and reflections by the student help the teacher to plan activities and to help the student succeed in the way the student learns the best.
