Alana's Common Sense Services
About
I am not a teacher.
At least, not in the traditional sense. Rather, I am the person who is willing to help simplify subjects and address the underlying problems that are hindering your learning and success.
YOU are smart. And you can succeed in school. However, we all face different challlenges and I can be the one to help with that.
Do you have a hard time focusing? I can be a homework buddy that will help you stay interested and engaged while you work.
Is it difficult to understand your teacher? Let me find a way to explain the subject in the way your brain wants.
Sometimes, stress from this hectic life gets in the way of our performance. And, while I'm not a therapist; I'm a good cook, and a better listener.
So, lets talk and find a way to make your school work -and life work- a little more manageable.
I enjoy breaking difficult, or just plain confusing concepts; into easy-to-understand ideas.
Most importantly, I like to understand the way YOU learn and remember things; and bridge the gap between your unlocked potential and the subject waiting to be mastered.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Names and introductions are typically a good start; but after the classic preliminaries are over, I like to get a solid idea of the students' class schedule.
Most importantly, I try to identify the largest challenges for the student, and which things present the greatest distraction to their learning proccess.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have experience tutoring both international and local students from pre-k through high school.
Though most of my tutoring centers around English and English as a second language, I also offer guidance in:
Mathematics
Science
Spanish as a Second Language
History
Economics
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing WILL differ, depending on multiple factors.
For schedules with consistently more than 4 hours per week, $10/ hour is a good template.
For schedules with consistently less than 4 hours per week, $8/ half hour is a good template.
How did you get started teaching?
My introduction to teaching came when my younger siblings began high school and my Mom wanted help homeschooling them through the tougher grades.
I started by guiding them through algebra, and began helping my other siblings with the lower grades from that point. All seven of them are homeschooled and it was quite a task for my Mom.
I realized that I loved teaching, and began to look for ways I could build a career out of it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a variety of students, though a few cases are more memorable than others.
One recent student was an eight year old in China
We corresponded through online classes and I guided her English studies through the study of both modern and classic children's books, as well as vocabulary lists and writing exercises.
Another student was a very active ten year old boy that was having trouble focusing on homework and was thoroughly uninterested in learning.
Through patience and firm guidance, I was able to help him keep on task throughout his lessons, and eventually begin enjoying the accomplishent of correctly and quickly finishing his assignments.
