About this tutor

Hello! My name is Becca, and I am going to school for elementary education, focusing in science.

I work my price for tutoring on a sliding scale.

Why?

We are in a pandemic, I understand people have lost jobs, and lack of financial access shouldn't be a barrier for people to obtain basic education.

My formal experience with academic tutoring was working with Wisconsin Reading Corps as a Literacy Tutor in 2018.  I had 15 students I met one-on-one for 20 minutes, every day. The goal was to get students to read increased words per minute(ideally 120 wpm). I tutored 1st-3rd grade.

My history with teaching includes: being a dance instructor at MSCR (Madison) for ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and jazz. The age groups were from first grade to 8th grade, depending on the class.

I have completed 46 hours of childcare training with Wisconsin Teaching Procedures, and multiple Mandated Reporting trainings as well.

This semester, my courses include: developmental psychology, education and culture, biology, and Conservation Environmental Science.

I live for the "lightbulb" moment with students. The shine of realization in their eyes when they recognize a concept, or tackle a difficult word/passage, or when they come up with their own connections to the material. It's those moments that make teaching so rewarding, and it's one of the main reasons I enjoy my work.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When I work with a new student, I will always try to create a rewarding experience with positive reinforcement and enthusiasm.

Depending on the age, I ask if the student has any specific goals/ideas that they want to achieve.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Currently enrolled with UW Milwaukee Education program, previous experience with childcare and tutoring both in Madison and Milwaukee (see profile)

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Because of recent events, I have a flexible pricing system. Message for further details.

What types of students have you worked with?

Elementary, bilingual, adult, teenagers

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

When a student and I were reading about a football game, and that student suggested to me that they read in an "announcer" voice.

It was a brilliant idea, so we incorporated it- loudly sounding out every word like an announcer.

Students have the best ideas.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Because my area of expertise is teaching reading and science, my best advice would be to find an instructor who helps you learn with your mistakes.
