I have four years experience teaching English Composition at the college level. I have also spent three years working as an individual and small-group tutor. I have a Master's Degree in English Literature, and I am currently working toward my PhD. Most of my experience is working with young adults and older returning students, but I also occasionally work with high school students who are looking to improve their grades in AP (or advanced track) English, or students who are preparing to take the SAT, ACT, or GRE.
I love teaching and tutoring because so many of my students come to me with the same problem. They are “bad writers,” and that’s my absolute favorite problem to help my students with. Because good writing is really just a set of skills that anyone can learn, as long as they’re committed to practicing them and working on improving them. That’s what I can help with.
In the time I’ve been working, I’ve been able to help students identify the skills they struggle the most with, sometimes that’s organization, or clarity of explanation, or depth of analysis, or using the proper vocabulary for the situation, any other number of things. Once those problems are identified, we can get to work improving those specific skills, and it’s amazing to watch students improve at something they used to think they wouldn’t ever be able to do well.
Katie is the best tutor I've ever had. She has helped me in excelling in every English class I have taken, which is about 4 at this point. Before she began tutoring me I couldn't write a paper to save my life and now I am able to write a sixteen page research paper. She's incredibly bright and able to communicate in a way that makes me want to improve my writing and not give up. If you need a tutor or someone to look over your work. Contact Katie! I can't recommend her enough.
The first thing I do with a new student is assess what that student needs, from a single session to help with a particular project to weekly skill-based lessons. I often ask my students to provide a sample of their writing before we meet so that I can get a sense of where they might be struggle. This helps to save time and get started on better footing.
I have fours years experience teaching college level writing, and three years experience working as a writing tutor for individuals or small groups. I have a Master's Degree in English Literature, and am currently a PhD student in the same field.
I generally prefer to work with students online, using a mix of google docs, skype, and e-mail. Depending on the particular needs of the student, I charge between $20-$30 an hour. I am happy to e-mail with potential students (or parents) and include more detailed price structures based on the situation. Please feel free to e-mail with questions.
Before setting up an appointment, students should consider what kind of help they are looking for, and how long it will take to get the help they need. If you are looking for help on a particular assignment from start to finish, that is a very different situation than looking for help with something that is almost finished, or support throughout a quarter/semester/yearlong class. Being clear about expectations and timelines is very helpful.
