Ellie's English Support
About
I have an B.A. in English and a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from a university of the liberal arts tradition, so I have a breadth of context and a depth of focused knowledge. The potential power of language is immesne; it's a big responsibility to wield such a tool effectively for good, but it's my passion to see that happen more. I will fight to help you do it!
It's exciting to help people express themselves. I love to help someone find the perfect words--whether they be thoughts on a piece of literature, the building blocks of an engaging essay, or simply the translation of a ELL's native tongue. I've received a gift for languages, and I've got to admit, English is the one I breathe!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would look to establish your skills, needs, and hopes. If I know what you want and what you have, we can start working towards the goal. With a English Language Learner, especially, I've found it's vital to understand your level as we begin. I want to tailor my instruction to you personally.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I grew up knowing that words came easily to me, a gift passed on from my mom. Whether reading or writing, I looked for ways to challenge myself and help others. After cycling through a lot of options, I realized the major for me was English. I finished my B.A. English in three years at The Master's University, including a humanities-focused study abroad in Italy and a rigorous graduate-style senior thesis project. I also fulfilled all the requirements to receive my institution's Certificate for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This program introduced me to the joys of linguistics and I took several classes in the field.
I've studied Spanish (four years, to fluency level in high school), Italian, Latin, and Hindi, and I'm eager to improve these and learn more.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I'm starting out, to be honest, but plan to charge around $15 per hour lesson. I am willing to discuss options.
How did you get started teaching?
I've tutored peers in writing since high school; in fact, my senior project in high school was a peer-editing service.
In college, I taught in several settings as experience for my classes: a local elementary school's after-school English program (mostly Spanish-speakers), a couple from Venezuela over Skype, and, finally, in India in both non-profit and tuitioned class settings.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with both adults and children in the US and in India. Their range of English proficiency spans from native tongue to nearly zero. Some have been able to write but needed help exacting their work, and others have known only the Roman alphabet.
