About this tutor

Hi, I am Sarah and I am a virtual writing tutor at Write Confidently where we focus on building confident, consistent and creative writers. I work with 9th-12th grade, undergrad and graduate students, professionals and everything in between.

What sets me apart? I spend a good deal of time instilling confidence in my students. Learning to write isn't just about being given quick skills to accomplish the next task. Writing is a life long skill and I spend time nurturing your deep understanding of the process so once our time together comes to an end, you feel confident enough to keep up the hard work on your own. This includes setting and reinforcing a rock solid writing foundation for each of my students to lean in to. As important as a foundation is to a home, a writer simply wouldn't be able to stand on their own without one either. And what happens when you have a strong understanding of foundational information? You feel more CONFIDENT!! And that's only the beginning.

It always brings me immeasurable joy to have a lesson suddenly click for a student--and I can't help but to let them know how proud I am! Writing was a struggle for my throughout school. It was only in my first year of college that I realized that I was actually a great one. And it was because of my first English professor who let me know what I had written was amazing. From there, I was unstoppable. That's what I bring into every single one of my lessons. I hope to be the one to show each of my students that they are more than capable and can become brilliant writers with a bit of guidance!

If you are interested in not only improving for the present but also the future, I would love to hear from you so we can begin the conversation to get you where you need and want to be!

:) Sarah Patillo

Sarah, has been an enormous blessing for my 13yr old. I have to say that my son is not easy to work with…words have to be painfully extracted. Sarah has somehow found a way to connect with him and his grades are reflecting their productive time together.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When working with a new student, I collect as much information about their current writing skills and mindset before we even have our first session. I do this through our initial email communication and requested writing samples. I use the valuable knowledge gained during this process to plan lessons personalized to the specific needs of that student.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor's in English with a concentration in creative writing. I have also been a tutor for over 12 years with the last two years dedicated to being a writing tutor. The years prior were spent teaching English.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

My hourly sessions are $50 for single bookings. Pricing may vary in the summer.

How did you get started teaching?

I began teaching in college. I would go into local middle and high schools to tutor students interested in attending college. We would work on note taking and studying skills. I also helped with homework--showing students how to use their notes and other resources to find the answers on their own.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with a diverse set of students ranging from children to adults. From kindergarten to 12th grade, undergraduate and graduate students, and adults looking to improve for professional or personal gain.

Each of my students have come to me with varying needs that required me to devise a personalized plan to help them achieve their goals.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Recently, I have been helping a student learn how to properly write a summary. He has had a difficult time grasping the need to write concisely, only include the most important details, and to write in his own words.

With a strong understanding of where he was struggling, I came up with a lesson that broke the task down into the tiniest pieces--starting with being able to identify the main ideas. By the end of this lesson, he had effortlessly written a summary that checked all of the boxes. But even better, he retained the information and has been able to apply the lesson on his own!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Learning to write isn't a skill you abandon the day you no longer have to write academic essays. You will always need to know how to communicate well in writen form.

Therefore, you should find a tutor that is concerned with filling you up with all the knowledge you will need to be self-sufficient when your time together comes to an end.

It's an easy task to simply get you a good grade on an writing assignment. But being able to learn how to do it yourself so you won't need a tutor next time is the ultimate goal for tutoring.

So when looking for a tutor, make sure they won't only help you in the present, but will also be setting you up for the future.

If you need writing tutor, you would benefit greatly from "testing out" several tutors. In this subject area, teaching styles vary greatly. Testing out a few who meet your minimum requirements will allow you to find the one that works well with your learning style.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

When searching for a writing tutor, consider the following questions:

What are your current needs? (improving skills, gaining confidence in writing, needing help with an assignment, help revising and editing, etc.)

What are you goals for tutoring? (What do you hope to gain from tutoring?)

What areas do you feel you struggle the most?

What is your greatest strength when it comes to writing?
