About this tutor

Hi, I am Sarah and I am a virtual writing tutor at Write Confidently where we focus on building confident, consistent and creative writers. I work with 5th-12th grade, undergrad and graduate students, professionals and everything in between.

What sets me apart? I spend a good deal of time instilling confidence in my students. When you or your child tutors with me, learning to write isn't just about being given quick skills to accomplish the next task. Writing is a life long skill and I spend time nurturing your deep understanding of the process so once our time together comes to an end, you feel confident enough to keep up the hard work on your own. This includes setting and reinforcing a rock solid writing foundation for each of my students to lean in to. As important as a foundation is to a home, a writer simply wouldn't be able to stand on their own without one either. And what happens when you have a strong understanding of foundational information? You feel more CONFIDENT!! (You will find that our time together comes full circle like this quite often). And that's only the beginning.

It always brings me immeasurable joy to have a lesson suddenly click for a student--and I can't help but to let them know how proud I am! Writing was a struggle for my throughout school. It was only in my first year of college that I realized that I was actually a great one. And it was because of my first English professor who simply let me know that what I had done was amazing. From there, I was unstoppable. That's what I bring into every single one of my lessons. I hope to be the one to show each of my students that they are more than capable and can become brilliant writers with a bit of guidance!

If you are interested in not only improving for the present but also the future, I would love to hear from you so we can begin the conversation to get you where you need and want to be!

:) Sarah Patillo

Sarah, has been an enormous blessing for my 13yr old. I have to say that my son is not easy to work with…words have to be painfully extracted. Sarah has somehow found a way to connect with him and his grades are reflecting their productive time together.

I can only rated Sara at a 4 at this time due to me just starting to work with Sara. She's beginning to know me and my needs to become better in grammar. I enjoy working with Sara. Thank you A Jackson

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

When I first start working with a student, I establish rapport. I accomplish this by taking time to get to know the student: their likes, dislikes, struggles, goals, and dreams. Having an understanding of what makes a student tick, helps me not only build classes to their specific interest but also connect with them on a deeper level which aids me as I work to nurture their confidence.

I also require a writing sample upfront. This sample only needs to be 1-2 paragraphs. I use this to gain incredible insight into the student's current writing abilities. And it helps steer our future lessons.

The way a session runs will vary depending on the student's goals and/or needs. However, I teach each student the same--using gentle teaching techniques. I employ the use of "I do, we do you do." This technique allows for a slow release of responsibility which I have found is an important part of building confidence in a skill.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor's in English and have been tutoring for over 10 years.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

$45 for a 1-hour lesson.

$68 for a 1.5-hour lesson.

How did you get started teaching?

I began teaching while I was attending college. I would go into local middle and high schools to assist students in their learning. My passion for personalized, 1-on-1 teaching has only grown since.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with a diverse set of students ranging from pre-kindergarten to high school. My previous students' abilities have also varied, ranging anywhere from only needing a bit of guidance to needing complete support.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

If you need an English/writing tutor, you would benefit greatly from "testing out" several tutors. In this subject area, teaching styles vary greatly. Testing out a few who meet your minimum requirements will allow you to find the one that works well with your learning style.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Can you pinpoint where you're struggling? What negative feelings or connotations do you have towards English or writing? What are your goals for tutoring?
