Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Figure out what your teacher is going to test you on and help you understand the material in a meaningful way.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a MSc (master's) in biology. My focus is on marine biology but I have taught college-level labs for Biology 2 (Biological Diversity), Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$30/hr for the first lesson in each topic/class. Discounted to $25 for repeat sessions on the same class (if you would like me to help with more than just the final exam).
How did you get started teaching?
It was a requirement to teach labs at the university when I was getting my master's degree.
What types of students have you worked with?
College level students for academic courses and all ages (2-100) for educational outreach.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was an instructor at a governement job and was teaching the contractor the order in which she should be doing a certain procedure. She had struggled with remembering this order for 2+ years and I came up with a way for her to FINALLY remember it so she can use it on the job! She was so excited!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't tutor with anyone who promotes rote memorization and then allows you to forget it as soon as you're done with the test. This is particularly true if the course is for your major/career because these topics come up over and over as you move forward in your program.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I have all the materials my teacher has given me so that my tutor can see what I'm working toward?
