I am the founder of Icyiza’s Classes LLC, bringing over a decade of experience in helping students excel academically. I specialize in advanced mathematics, English, test preparation, and comprehensive college admissions guidance, while also teaching French, Spanish, and academic writing. My approach blends rigor with encouragement, and I design tailored study guides and lesson plans that consistently lead to measurable results in both the classroom and on standardized exams.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process begins with a complimentary initial consultation, which may be conducted virtually over Zoom or in person at my professional location in Rockville, MD. During this meeting, I introduce myself to both the student and their parent or guardian and invite them to share their academic goals, challenges, and aspirations so I can form a complete understanding of the student’s needs. I also take time to demonstrate my teaching style, which relies exclusively on my iPad and laptop as a mirrored digital board. By using a notes application that seamlessly records and organizes all written work, I ensure that nothing is ever lost and that students have continuous access to every concept, problem, and solution we cover together. This thoughtful introduction allows me to design a tailored path forward—one that is not only academically rigorous but also transparent, enduring, and uniquely suited to the student’s growth.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Education and Training:
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from George Mason University, where I graduated with honors. This rigorous academic foundation has been instrumental in cultivating my ability to convey complex mathematical concepts with clarity and precision.
Professional Experience:
With over a decade of experience in education, I have had the privilege of teaching at esteemed institutions such as Prince William County Public Schools and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Additionally, I have served as a Test Preparation Instructor for The Princeton Review, specializing in comprehensive standardized test preparation.
As the founder and lead instructor of Icyiza’s Classes LLC, I have meticulously developed and implemented curricula for advanced mathematics courses, including AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Precalculus, and collegiate-level courses such as differential equations, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra. My pedagogical approach seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring that students not only master mathematical principles but also cultivate critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving prowess.

I offer personalized, one-on-one tutoring at a rate of $50 per hour. To provide flexibility and reward commitment, I also offer discounted rates for pre-purchased hour packages:
• 10–24 hour packages: Receive a 5% discount, making 10 hours $475 (instead of $500) and 24 hours $1,140 (instead of $1,200).
• 30 hour package: Receive a 10% discount, making the full package $1,350 (instead of $1,500).
This pricing structure allows students to invest in consistent, ongoing support while benefiting from reduced rates for larger commitments.
How did you get started teaching?
My journey into teaching began in high school, where my aptitude for mathematics was consistently recognized by my instructors, who often recommended me as a resource to underclassmen seeking academic support. These early experiences ignited a profound passion for education and a commitment to helping students achieve their fullest potential, motivating me to continually refine my pedagogical approach.
After graduating high school, this dedication was further strengthened through my work at New Life Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, where I was specifically chosen to serve because of my exceptional skills and achievements in mathematics, including a score of 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam, an 800 on the SAT Math section, and an 800 on the SAT Math II Subject Test when it was still offered. This opportunity allowed me to cultivate learning in a diverse, challenging environment, reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of personalized instruction. I strive to create rigorous yet supportive learning experiences, empowering each student not only to master complex academic concepts but also to develop confidence, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a diverse spectrum of students, ranging from exceptionally gifted and highly motivated learners to those in remedial academic settings. My experience also includes working with students for whom English is a second language, including West African immigrant students from Francophone backgrounds and Hispanic students. My students’ ages span from elementary through early college, a range that my extensive experience and refined instructional skills have uniquely prepared me to support. This breadth of experience has honed my ability to be multifaceted and adaptable, allowing me to tailor instruction to each student’s individual learning style, academic level, and goals, fostering both mastery of subject matter and the development of critical thinking, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One recent event I am particularly fond of involved volunteering with underprivileged students in my community to provide SAT preparation. Over several weeks, I had the privilege of guiding these students through rigorous practice, helping them build not only mastery of test content but also confidence, discipline, and strategic thinking. Witnessing their dedication and perseverance was truly inspiring—their hard work and resilience culminated in a median SAT score of 1310, a tangible testament to their growth and commitment. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of individualized instruction and highlighted my ability to cultivate success across academic disciplines. Guiding students to reach their fullest potential, whether in mathematics, language, or critical reasoning, continues to be one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When seeking a tutor, it is essential to understand that extensive education or prestigious degrees alone do not define true expertise in the field of education. Equally important is ensuring that the instructor’s teaching style aligns with your individual mode of understanding, and that they communicate with both elegance and depth of knowledge in the subject area where guidance is needed. Prospective students should also consider the tutor’s formal training and review documented experiences of past student success, as these provide tangible evidence of the tutor’s ability to foster growth, mastery, and confidence. Ultimately, the most effective tutor is one who combines intellectual rigor, adaptability, and a proven track record of helping students achieve their academic goals.
