About this tutor

I am a CRLA level I & II certified tutor for Writing. I worked at the Utah Vally University Writing Center for a year and a half where I worked as a general tutor and a specialized Writing Fellow for discipline-specific writing. I graduated from UVU with a Bachelor's Degree in English - emphasis in Creative Writing. This degree helped prepare me to tutor students in everything from English Literature to Technical Writing. I have worked with both High School and University level students.

I am very passionate about writing and education. My services are unique because I focus on helping students develop good learning and writing habits rather than just focussing on one assignment. It is important to me that a student is learning more about their personal writing process, not just getting words on the page.

I enjoy tutoring writing and English because I feel that writing and comprehension skills are important for any field. Many people are quick to disregard writing as important, but I have already seen what a huge impact it has on any education and career. I continually hope to help students develop those skills and find a passion for writing!!

Kristen is an excellent tutor because she always gives helpful feedback. Her focus is not just to fix your paper, but to help you become a more capable writer. When I have tutoring sessions with Kristen, I always leave feeling more confident in my work and excited to continue making improvements. I would highly recommend Kristen to anyone looking for a writing tutor.

She is super passionate about writing and about teaching others! She loves what she does and that makes it super easy to ask questions and makes you get excited about it as well. I never thought I would learn to like writing papers until I worked with her. She is also really complimentary and doesn't make you feel stupid when asking questions. It made my writing experience SO MUCH BETTER! I learned a ton!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

The most important thing to me is to set expectations for what I expect and what the student expects from our sessions. Reviewing what we both want to accomplish and quickly assessing and addressing how I will help reach those goals is important to me.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I worked at the Utah Valley University Writing Center from August 2017 to October 2018. While I worked there, I worked in the main center and also as a discipline-specific writing tutor.

While there, I became CRLA certified at level I and level II.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with University level students and High School level students.

I have worked with students on assignments ranging from English Literature & Writing Assignments, History Essays, Philosophy & Ethics, Engineering Reports/Projects, Construction Management Research & Technical Writing, and even Psychology Research Assignments.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Look for someone that you feel like you mesh well with. I think it is important to find someone you can trust with your writing and be honest with you. If you find someone who is constantly dancing around you, it will be hard to make substantial progress.
