Frequently asked questions

My typical process is to arrange a face to face meeting (virtually or in person) where we dicuss their goals and specific needs. Organizing a schedule that works for us both and outline specific skills or standards that we can successfully achieve during our time together.

I have been an ELA teacher for over 5 years now with experience in teaching SPED, ELL, ACT Prep, resume and college Essay writing, grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, reading strategies, classic literature analysis, modern literature analysis, scientific research writing, etc. I also have extensive experience with educational platforms and software such as Nearpod, Canvas, IXL, Quizziz, Kahoot, Microsoft and Google Suites, to name a few.

My standard pricing consists of:

$25 initial meeting (30 min session) -Online or in person. A face to face meeting to exchange ideas, and evaluate the needs for you/ your student moving forward.

$40-50/ hr for curriculum or instruction sessions where I would deliver a foundational lesson and review student work. For example: You have not begun writing your college essay and have no idea where to begin. My course will entail facilitating brainstorming, discussion, and specified instruction to get you where you are comfortable moving forward.

$25/hr for resume or college essay writing review or drafting. Example: You have a draft of a college essay, but feel it needs some help. I will meet with you and help revise the essay.

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. Literature, stories, and the discussion of ideas helps us connect to the past, present, and entertain ideas of our future. Travel the world, walk in someone else's shoes, explore the furthest reaches of the galaxy...the opportunities and excitement is endless...if you know where to look and how to enjoy it.

I have had the priviledge in my career to work with students of all ages, races, religions, and creeds. I have taught refugees from Vietnam, Somalia, and Mexico. I have experienced inner city gang relations and at-risk populations. I have extensive experience with SPED students dealing with anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, ADD and ADHD, and other learning difficulties. One of my passions is being able to find creative solutions to address differentiated instruction to help students find confidence in academic circles in which they have previously felt defeat. After COVID, teachers are seeing a huge drop in reading comprehension and writing skills. Many, dare I say, ALL students could use extra help or intervention in reading, writing, and basic communication skills to help bridge the COVID gap.

Recently, I learned a student of mine from 2009 has graduated as an English teacher! He was one of my first students when I taught in inner-city San Diego. He started off very apathetic to school and was being recruited for a local gang with another one of my students. This population was 90% SPED, 85% second language learners, and the retention/ graduation rate was around 30%. I had to figure out a way to teach The Odyssey by Homer to students who could only read at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level. Miguel was the key. I found out that he was incredibly talented in graffiti and street art. So I developed a visual project to encourage a connection to the text and story. He was immediately engaged when I told him I would allow him to complete the visual art portion in any style he wanted. The end result was absolutely incredible. I moved away from that school and had no contact with Miguel, until just a few months ago. I found that he was a teacher at that same high school now! I felt so happy that I was able to keep Miguel in school for that 9th grade year, but after moving I had no real confidence he would continue to remain engaged. I was so humbled and thrilled to see that at least for one student, I made a difference.
