Improve Your Math Skills
About
As a student myself, I excelled in mathematics, earning a 5 on the AP calculus test my senior year of high school. I have always been a peer tutor for my classmates since I was in high school, but I have also been a paid teaching assistant since September 2013. I have excellent teaching skills, and have a talent for explaining principles in ways that students can understand and remember. My sibilngs request me to help them with their math, physics, and chemistry homework. Math can be hard, and sometimes tutoring can be a frustrating experience for teacher and student. I am good at avoiding those frustrations and providing a good balance of instruction and encouragement. As appropriate, I ask questions to help students teach themselves.
My favorite moment as a tutor is that moment when something clicks for the student and they are able to replicate the problem or demonstrate their understanding.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Usually I start by finding where the student is getting confused. I do this by asking questions to guide them through the mathematic process until I find the hang up. Once this is accomplished, I walk them through the problem, explaining each step, encouraging them for each thing they do right. Then we practice with a similar problem. I take them through the problem again, using questions to help them navigate step by step. We repeat until the student is confident in the execution of the math problem.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been an on-campus tutor and teaching assistant for the past 8 semesters. For several of those semesters, I specialized in teaching international students, many of whom spoke English as a second language. This helped me develop multiple teaching skills, especially teaching simply and teaching to the understanding of the student. This has made my teaching individualized, adaptive, and clear.
