Parfitt Engineering Design
About
As a UK chartered mechanical engineer I have experience teaching STEM at technical college level while also running my own private business for the last 4 years. The overlap between academia and industry allows my students to put their knowledge into practice and make learning fun and relevant while also ensuring those in industry are always working at the cutting edge. I personally have 19 years engineering experience in both academia and industry with a Masters and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Science, technology and math are subjects I use every day and teach to others at home, college and university.
Parfitt Engineering Design provides specialist mechanical engineering research and development services in the UK and, more recently, the US. This includes using mechanical and electrical skills to engineer hybrid military vehicles, develop record breaking unmanned aircraft and engineer subcomponents for natural gas engines.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by making sure the fundamentals of the STEM subject are understood. If necessary we would revisit the basic, underlying math.
I like to use teaching material that contains regular worked examples. For engineering topics in particular I like to incorporate extra learning experiences (demonstrations, videos or additional reading material) that helps put the subject in context.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters in mechanical engineering, 9 years industrial experience as a chartered mechanical engineer in the UK and a PhD in engineering where I worked closely with an industrial sponsor for 4 years at a UK university.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching part time at a local technology college while also working as an engineer.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students anywhere from elementary age up to college and higher education level.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I most recently taught thermodynamics to college students. It is one of the hardest subjects for students to grasp but they appreciated the delivery of the course (which I developed from scratch) for the college I was working for at the time.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Engineering, science and math are chosen as career paths by many students often because they are fun but, sometimes difficult to grasp. I was taught by people who could convey these concepts really well while also making them really relevant. Find someone who can do both.
