Mrs. Hancock uses multiple tools and strategies to connect learning, make math make sense, and develop abstract thinking needed for future math success. Mrs. Hancock holds a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and is a certified T3 Instructor through Texas Instruments.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask lots of questions when working with new students. Through the questioning process, I am able to learn how the student thinks, the way a student is processing what he/she is seeing, and lead the student through the learning process. Questioning allows the student to demonstrate knowledge and learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
20 years teaching experience, 14 of those specifically in middle/high school math classes.
Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

How did you get started teaching?
When I was little, I played school with my stuffed animals, so I guess I've was always meant to be a teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've had the honor and blessing to teach ALL types of students, from all walks of life, through the full range of the learning spectrum. My favorite students are the ones who think they can't do math or the GT kids who have always felt like they were smarter than their teachers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was pulled from my classes for two full days to provide intensive remediation to juniors and seniors who hadn't passed the Algebra 1 EOC. I poured myself into them, showed them everything I could possibly cram into them to prep for this exam. And then waited for the results. Every single one of them arrived at my classroom door to hug me and than me for helping them pass. I cried! I was so proud of them! And seeing them be proud of themselves is an experience that keeps me motivated every single day!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you can feel comfortable talking to. Getting help requires vulnerability and honesty, so if you can't feel comfortable expressing your weaknesses, find someone else.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I willing to admit when I am confused?
What skill or concept always baffled me?
Can I compute basic math facts without a calculator?
Where will I be most comfortable learning and focusing?
Do I need food before I learn or while I learn?
