About
Hello, my name is Sridhar! I've been tutoring math since I was in high school. After graduating I spend about 2 years teaching k-12 math at a math-only tutoring center called "Mathnasium." Although we technically taught k-12 most of our students were k-8, so I gained a lot of experience teaching math from basic addition and subtraction to geometry and algebra II. Of course, just about every math tutor knows their k-12 math, but not every math tutor knows how to teach it. Working at the Mathnasium let me hone this skill.
Around my junior year of college, I was hired by my university to be one of their peer tutors for calculus I-III. This is where I got most of my experience teaching higher-level math courses. We had a pretty diverse population at good ol' UTD so I got to work with people from just about every background. Some were young while others were in their 40's. Some took their last math class last term while some hadn't done an algebra question in decades. I learned where people tend to get stuck when learning certain topics, but more importantly, I learned how to cater my explanation and teaching style to each individual so they can get unstuck.
After graduating from college, I starting working as a tutor on Chegg. I wasn't on the platform for long but I've gotten to see what not only the universities around me teach in their math courses, but what universities from across the nation have in their curriculum. I've had several students that I've worked with on the site write that I was one of, if not the best, tutor they've ever had. Chegg is getting rid of its live tutoring service mid-january so I'm not sure how long my profile/reviews will be on the site, but here is a link to those reviews.

I got matched with him when I came looking for help on my calculus homework- he helped me to work through all the problems, and even helped me by giving me recommendations for resources in my other courses (we ended up having the same major!). Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing on the agenda is to figure out what the student's goals are. After all, you don't want to start teaching someone where all the equations come from when all someone wants to know is how to plug the right numbers into a graphing calculator to pass their next test. The second thing to do is to do a quick diagnostic with the student. Sometimes this is just me asking the student to do a few questions and other times, if they feel like they aren't too far behind or already know where their knowledge gaps are, I'll fix things as they come up. The way I go about fixing things is by first making sure the student knows the prequisite knowledge for the topic, explaining the topic at hand, talking through an example, and then having the student do progressively harder problems on that topic until they feel like they've mastered it. After doing this enough times, all of a sudden, you're making A's.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've got several years of tutoring under my belt. I started in high school by tutoring my friends and some of their siblings for their math classes and the SAT/ACT. After that, I worked at a K-12 tutoring center called The Mathnasium. I say K-12 but most of our students were K-8. I was there for about 2 years and got a lot of experience working with and teaching all of elementary and middle school math. I later started teaching at my college, The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), in their peer tutoring program. I mainly taught calculus I-III as well as all the math classes under that. Since I majored in biochemistry, I also taught general and organic chemistry as well as physics I (mechanics). Teaching at college allowed me to get practice teaching more complicated topics to a huge variety of people at a high frequency. With that much practice, I got pretty good at it. After graduating from college, I started teaching online with Chegg. This gave me plenty of experience teaching online as well as a chance to see how other universities structure their math/science curriculums, so I've seen just about every variation and special topic for each math class I teach. What all this amounts to is I have become very good at my job.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $35/hr for online tutoring or live tutoring when the student comes to me. If I have to travel, I charge $45/hr.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've got a lot of experience with pretty much every age group and demographic. I worked in places that catered mainly for K-8 as well as for my university and Chegg which catered mainly for highschool/college students. Since I live in a pretty diverse area, I've gotten to work with people from just about every socioeconomic background. I know how to cater how I teach and the real-world examples to be as effective as I can with each person.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
First priority is to make sure your tutor knows what they're doing. If they have a lot of experience, then they should be good on that front. However, you can't know for sure until the first actual tutoring session. If you feel like your understanding of the material hasn't advanced, then make sure that's your last tutoring session. Second priority is making sure they actually do care about you. Like any job, there's a lot of people who just go through the motions and show up just for the paycheck. You want a tutor who actually likes teaching, who wants to see you succeed. Don't stick with someone who just shows up, does your homework for you, and leaves. Lastly, try to pick someone you can get along with and who you might be able to consider as a friend. It's not the most important thing to look for, but it makes the learning experience a lot smoother and enjoyable.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The first questions to ask yourself are "how much time do I have" and "how much ground do I need to cover?" If your calculus final is coming up and you don't know the first thing about derivatives, you can't expect to be fully prepped after an hour of tutoring or without putting in a ton of time yourself when the tutor isn't there. The next thing to ask yourself is "can I fix this myself without a tutor?" There are a lot of videos and tools online now to teach yourself just about anything. To save yourself some money, give good ol' youtube a spin before trying a tutor. Even if you don't get a full understanding of whatever topic you're working on, you'll know more than nothing which makes things easier for both you and a potential tutor. When you want a tutor is when you want to save yourself time. Experienced tutors wind up developing a sixth sense for how to explain concepts with just the right words for people to understand and know where the common sticking points are for every topic. They know what problems you'll have before they come up and can find out pretty quick what might be holding you back. Other than those questions, a good tutor should be able to figure out what you need pretty quick.
