Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first objective is to find out the goal(s) of the parent/student. I want to know learning differences and any concerns either one has in past educational experiences. At that time, I will assess the student for a baseline of skill/knowledge and design a plan of instruction once completed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in English and a Masters in Psychology. I have been in the field of education and/or individual training for over 30 years.
How did you get started teaching?
In high school, I listed my future career as an English teacher. At 19-years old, my first position in training was with individuals with cognitive and developmental disabilities.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with K-12 students, preschoolers, and adults, all with varying degrees of language and learning abilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
The most recent event I am fond of is teaching our dog a new trick in the swimming pool.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a tutor who can create a personalized approach to your needs and goals. Tutoring should not be a cookie-cutter approach to teaching a subject, especially in the area of language arts.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think through the following questions:
- What do I want from tutoring in this subject area? Why do I need or want tutoring? (to raise a grade, standardized exams, college prep, etc)
- How do I best learn? (visual, audible, kinesthetic, etc)
- What type of tutor am I most responsive to?
- What is my favorite and least favorite part of this subject matter?
