I am very hands on and logic based. I like to help students "think through" their math problems. "Does the answer I have make sense", what exactly is the question asking? Can I create a visual model of the problem or one similar so I can "see" it.

I work much better one-on-one in person then on line. I just think body language, gestures, and small suttle cues are better indicators of comprehension then verbal affirmation.

Seeing a child's face light up when they finally grasp a concept or idea makes everything I do worth while.

Building self-confidence and giving them the foundation to be successful and to tackle difficult problems with confidence is what matters to me. When a child asks me if they can do another problem or try a harder one, I know I have succeeded in giving them the desire to learn.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Evaluation to see where there are foundational fundamental gaps in learning. Usually children struggle in math because they have gaps in early childhood learning. Math is simple: add, subtract, multiply, divide; that's it! Math is simply a combination of some or all of these. I like to try and find those gaps and fill them in. Only then can we begin to tackle the current problem areas. Sometime this takes a few minutes to discover sometimes it takes several sessions.

I am not a traditional "by the book only" math teacher. When I taught in public school I always challenged my students to try and find "new ways" to solve their math problems. We as a class would test new theories and see if they worked EVERY SINGLE TIME. If we found a flaw, we brainstormed to see if it could be tweaked to work every time. If not we tossed it out and moved on. It was ok to fail as long as in the end we knew why. The old "no it won't work do it the way the book says" was NEVER a phrase used in my classroom!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am certified EC through 9th grade in any subject. My original college certification was math and science. I also am certified ESL but just because I am certified to teach other subjects doesn't mean I would! I am only certified because the school district required it. Math is my specialty and passion followed by science (biblical science!)
