I have have been teaching elementary for over ten years, kindergarten to 5th grade. I have helped all levels of learners, from students with special needs to gifted and talented. I try to motivate all my students with patience and positive reinforcements along with some fun.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to build relationships with all of my students. I try to get to know them and build trust. This is important to help them open up and have a postive outlook on learning. Creating a safe zone helps students take risks and to not fear making mistakes as they grow and learn.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over ten years of experience working with elementary students. I have worked with all grade levels either as a special education paraprofessional or a classroom teacher. I have a BA in education and I am crtified to teach early education to 8th grade, special education, ESL, and gifted and talented. I continue to keep growing and learning through out the school year by attending workshops and trainings, so I can learn new ways to reach my students.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching by first volunteering at my son's elementary school, and I grew to love helping young children learn and grow. Everyday is something new with young students. It is rewarding when to see students get excited about learning.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide variety of students. I've had students with special learning needs both academic and emotional. Some students have been under the autism spectrum, high and low functioning, and verbal and nonverbal. I ave taught bilingual and esl students. I have also taught gifted and talented students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event that I am fond of is when a former student came to me to show me his progress. This student was in my third grade class and only knew a few letters and sounds. By the time he left my class he was reading at a first grade level. His writing skills matched his reading skills. Well recently, he came to me to show that he was still making progress and he read me a paragrapgh that he had wrote. Seeing the pride across his face brought tears to my eyes.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think it is important for students to be able to say what they need help with. Even if they say that they didn't understand the day's topic and need it to be restated. It makes it easier when you can tell a teacher what part of the lesson was confusing. But, it is also important for the teacher to make the student feel comfortable to ask for help. This is why I like to build a relationship of trust with all my students, that way they feel free to speak up when help is needed.
