## About

My name is Cheryl McCosh, and I live in Houston with my husband, three Montessori children, and two dogs. I have been tutoring students of all ages for over twenty years in both mathematics and executive function and have taught Algebra and Pre-Algebra in the classroom.

Helping to grow a student’s confidence in their mathematical abilities has long been a passion of mine. I love seeing the spark in my students’ eyes when they “get it” and math goes from something confusing and even impossible to something exciting and fun. My approach is to identify areas of strength and growth and build on the latter, while challenging the former. I help my students understand the “why” behind the math, not just the “how.” Not only does developing this deep understanding of mathematical concepts help them on tests and classwork (they can derive the solution to problems instead of relying on their memory to solve it), it is also what makes math interesting and engaging.

Over the last ten years , I have also studied writing in my pursuit of publishing and have recently begun working with students on their writing. So far, that has been limited to helping students develop and edit college admissions essays (with acceptances to several top universities and scholarship opportunities!), but I’m looking to expand my services in this area as well.

I have a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Rice University and BS in Mathematics from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I also studied English literature and creative writing. I look forward to helping your child succeed in their academic pursuits!
