Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to make sure the student is comfortable talking about their needs, so I ask several questions that pertain to the student's likes and dislikes. What I try to do is determine the student's learning style and cater my sessions towards their learning style.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Electrical Engineering from Prairied View A&M University. This degree means that I have taken over 30 hours of upper level math courses. In addition, I have a MBA from The Univeristy of Phoenix. I also taugth for 4 years in the Dallas Indpendent School District for 4 years. This is where i actually got the idea to start my own Educational Services business. I love and have a passsion for seeing kids succeed. Educating kids, for me, is more ministry than profit.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing points are based on the service you want. Trust me, you probably won't find better pricing in the Metroplex. I discuss pricing with parents during the initial consultation session.
How did you get started teaching?
I only taught for 4 years during a period where my company downsized. I have always said that in case of an ecnomic crisis, everyone needs to have a fallback plan. In 2000 during the dotcom crash, I was impacted at work and decided to go into teaching. I loved it, however, the pay could not justify me staying. So instead of giving up on kids, I formed my own business, where I could help kids after I got off work.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with kids from 3rd grade through college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
All of my events involve my kids. They are 24, 19, and 16. So whatever events they are involved in, I'm there and thoroughly enjoy them. My oldest son plays professional basketball overseas, my youngest son is in college playing basketball, and my daughter is still in high school
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure that teacher can not only teach the material, but that they can actually REACH the kid. ANYBODY can teach, but few can REACH. Its what I call THE REACH FACTOR that separates the good teachers from the not so good teachers.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
First I think the student should know what they are looking fo in the tutor and be able to express that explicitly. Second I think the student needs to understant their learning style. Are they more visual learning, more kinetic learners, etc. Finally I think the student should understand their peak learning period. At what time of the day are you most attentive and readly to absorb.
