About

Hi! My name is Moriah, and I'm an artist, part-time nanny, and academic tutor. I've had about 15 years of intensive art training, including at the university level. I graduated at the top of my class from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. I've been featured in numerous galleries and both print and online publications, and won awards for my work at Maryland Institute College of Art. As an academic tutor, I have 5 years of experience working with ages 2-10 in beginning reading, basic math, school preparation!

However, none of that is what makes me stand out as an art teacher and academic tutor. Outside of my work as a tutor, I also have extensive experience working with children. In the past 7 years, I've worked as a summer camp counselor, babysitter, and both part-time and full-time nanny. I've cared for kids ages 0-14, using Montessori methods. I bring this approach to tutoring and private lessons and encourage my students to express themselves and grow while learning specific skills. I love to grow my students' confidence and self-esteem as well as their skills!

I've taken almost every top art class, portfolio class, and enrichment class in Dallas since I was a child, and I believe that even the most expensive class with the most prestige can't compete with the one-on-one attention that private lessons offer. I'm pleased to be able to provide that option to everyone, even if the "investment" classes or tutoring centers are out of your price range!

I offer both art tutoring and private lessons for students ages 3 through adult, academic tutoring for ages 2-10, and private art classes with up to 10 students per class, as well as portfolio classes to prepare your student to apply to Booker T. Washington HSPVA or art school at the university level. I create my own curriculum, tailored to your priorities and interests, and can work around your schedule.

Please reach out with any questions!

My favorite thing about teaching and tutoring is my students. I absolutely love making my students feel confident in their skills and their journey overall. It's very rewarding!

My high schooler (junior) worked with Moriah for about 7 months to help create and perfect her portfolio as she prepares to apply to art schools in the northeast. Moriah knew exactly what she was doing, and helped my daughter stay organized and on top of it. They were able to create an impressive portfolio, and my daughter is more than prepared to submit her applications this fall. I highly recommend working with Moriah.

Moriah worked with my third grader for about a year on reading, writing, and basic math. We could not recommend her more. She was patient, kind, and clearly knowledgeable about how to teach kids effectively. Ive recommended her to all of my parent friends, and although L. improved with Moriahs help and doesnt need tutoring anymore, if my younger kids need some extra help we will definitely call Moriah!

Moriah was fantastic with my 6 year old son. After a semester working with her on his reading and writing skills, his confidence went way up and we saw a different kid in the classroom! We met with a couple other tutors before Moriah, but we went with her because of her experience with kids. Her approach was just different, way more creative and patient, and we’re so glad we did. Thank you Moriah! Ben sends his love too!

Moriah was fantastic!! I took private art lessons with her over the summer, and I was shocked by how much better my painting and drawing skills were by the end. She did give me homework, but it was really helpful to try to practice what we’d worked on together. My favorite part was how flexible she was with the lessons. A few times I mentioned something specific I wanted to study or work on, and she incorporated it into our next lesson, which made it really fun and exciting to go to class. I plan to take a sculpture or multi media collage class with her in the future!

Frequently asked questions

First, I arrange a brief phone call with each new student and/or their parent to discuss their specific skills, interests, and areas of desired growth. After that, we can schedule a preliminary lesson or assessment, and see if we're a good fit for each other. Finally, we'll decide on a regular schedule and I'll start preparing for our class!

I graduated from the visual arts cluster at Dallas's Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, at the top of my class. I attended one of the top five art schools in the country, the Maryland Institute College of Art, where I received multiple competitive scholarships and was featured in several shows and publications.

As an academic tutor, I've seen both sides of it: I struggled with reading and math as a child due to dyslexia, and I needed a lot of extra help. I had a plethora of tutors and extra classes, and I was able to get through my academic career from elementary school to college with great success. My experience as a student myself and now as a tutor has shown me what really works, and helps me meet my students where they are - with lots of creativity and patience!

For art lessons: Pricing varies depending on a variety of factors, but generally ranges from $45-75 per hour. I recommend lessons of at least 1.5 hours, and up to 3.

For academic tutoring: With ages 2-10, I recommend half hour to hour-long sessions up to 5 times per week. My rate starts at $30/hour, and varies depending on distance.

For academic tutoring: I've worked with ages 2-10 with a range of skills and abilities! With my youngest students, I've worked as a private pre-K/homeschool teacher, helping them prepare for school through fun and educational activities to grow specific skills and/or challenge them! For elementary school kids, my focus is beginning reading. Most of the students I've worked with struggle with reading, and I've found that it's usually a lack of confidence that makes reading even more daunting for them. I have experience working with kids with ADHD, dyslexia, and kids with ASD!

Be as specific as possible with your goals and expectations, and be realistic about how much time you're willing to put in outside of class. Communicate with your tutor as much as possible, and be honest! Your feedback will improve the quality of your instruction. Finally, don't be afraid to make mistakes; it's the best way to learn, and when it comes to art, mistakes can be even more beautiful!

For academic tutoring:

What are you hoping to achieve from private tutoring? Why are you turning to a private tutor instead of a group setting or resources at your child's school?

Do you know what areas your child is strong in, and where there's room to grow?

What is your child's attention span like? How do they best learn (visually, hands-on, etc)?

What is your schedule like? How many times per week do you want to meet? Are you willing to travel to your tutor, or do you want your tutor to meet you?

For art lessons:

What are you hoping to achieve from private art tutoring or lessons? Are you hoping to expand your artistic skillset, have fun with a new hobby, or a build a competitive portfolio?

How often are you interested in meeting, and what is your budget?

Are you interested in or willing to complete assignments outside of class time, designed to build on the skills we've learned during class?
