Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to find out what kind of timetable we are working with, if there is a "big" test coming up we can jump straight into test stategies, focusing on simplifying problems so they are doable under stress. If you are looking for a weekly/scheduled tutoring session then we can focus on cementing the lesson information so the student can recall needed information later throughout their course.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been an Instructional Aide for 3 years, I have been working with students specifically in Math on a High school/Middle school level. Overall I've worked in over a dozen different classrooms with student of all Math abilities.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always helped and tutored on an informal level to cousins, neighboors, and friends. Add in a love of Math and this seemed like the obvious career choice.
Fast forward to working in a school and I've found what I was born to do!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked mainly assisting students within the Special Education department who learn in a General Education classroom. Students with ADHD, Dyslexia, and ESL students are the students I help through the General Education requirements/assesments. I have also worked with a few gifted learners who required more challenging activities.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can match what you bring to the table. If you need a slowed down, rehashed lesson make sure they have the kindness you deserve. If you need 20 examples followes by 20 drilled practice questions make sure they have the patience you deserve. If you need to engage with a subject on the next level with extra thought provoking activities make sure they have the care you deserve.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is the next achievment in my course? What concepts do I need to master to complete this achievment?
Which problems do I have a difficult time working through? Which problems do I have trouble starting?
Are there any words or terms I don't know? Are there any mistakes that I make a lot?
