Mini Math Maestra
About
I'm a certified secondary math teacher in Texas and have a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. My true passion, though, is creating culturally relevant content for kids! I've taught and worked with students of all backgrounds with challenges including but not limited to students with Learning Disabilities, English Language Learners, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit (or Hyperactive) Disorder, Emotional Disturbance, Low-Literacy, etc. My philosophy is if learning is not relevant, it's likely not being learned; so here you'll find nontraditional techniques and strategies to meet this generation of students' needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first meeting is always the most important because I am able to get a temperature read on my new kiddo. I am a strong believer in the importance of real world connections and like to adapt my content to meet each individual learner. Once I get to know each student, we typically grow at an exponential rate. Building trust is a major component in this and creating a positive connotation with tutoring, rather than viewing it as an obligation, will do wonders for mindset and intrinsic motivation.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been educating teenagers in math for the past 6 years. My primary background is in Title I instruction and working with subpopulations such as low-income, at risk, students with disabilities, and English language learners. This being said, I work at a University in the summer and supervise the elite high schoolers in Austin, TX. I pride myself on creating comfort and trust with each student and truly believe background is just a motivating force, never a defecit.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Due to the curated style of curriciulum and notes, I charge $60 a tutoring session. Pricing varies greatly based on curricular needs and modifications that might be needed.
How did you get started teaching?
I became a teacher out of sheer fate. From an early age I was identified as gifted and talented and treated a certain way based on solely my intellect. Fast forward 12 years, and my sister was born with a set of challenges vastly different from my own and treated poorly, unethically, and with bias because of her differences. Seeing how the education system treats students with high ability in comparison to those with great need is my main motivational force. I want to positively impact students with obstacles and help them achieve equal success to those more priveledged, as well as teach empathy and tolerance through example.
What types of students have you worked with?
At this point, I cannot think of any type of student I haven't worked with! I have worked with low-income, affluent, immigrant, and even homeless students. In my classroom each year, I serve students with needs across the board such as ADHD, learning disabilities, Dyslexia, emotional disturbance, English Langage Learners, Social Disorders, and more. I also serve on-level and pre-AP on top of that. I mean it when I tell you, there is no kid that cannot be taught!
