About

I love to write! I have a Bachelors degree in English from The University of Texas (1989), and I have been The Curriculum Coordinator for NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. I have worked with special needs students who passed The STAAR Test, and I have tutored students ages 4 years - 12th grade, with English, Test Prep, SAT Vocab Prep and Reading Comprehension/Essay Skills. My approach is calmly professional with an appropriate sense of humor. My favorite summer school classes were in Houston at The Kinkaid School and Duchesne Academy; 5th graders learning how to write their memoirs and learning how to be better writers.

I don’t consider this as work; it’s an opportunity to stretch my brain but more importantly, to have fun helping others learn. Time away from a classroom can be spent very creatively and efficiently so that you can feel even more confident when that school bell rings in the fall!

Frequently asked questions

I always spend about 15 minutes asking them a few questions about their likes and dislikes. I've found over the years that the best ice breaker is to tell them a little about me and a funny story about being a teacher.

While I was studying at The University of Texas, my favorite classes were English of all types; they were small after my freshman year when I chose it as my minor. We had visiting authors and past Texas "celebrities" as speakers! It was fascinating.

I charge $35 per hour.

I began working at my home church, my first job, and I loved it! Someone I trust very much suggested I do it, after I had given most of my life away to the fine dining restaurant business. I had become burned out on adults, so to speak!

Special needs (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, ADHD) one on one private tutoring to Pre-K and 7 years of Turning Twos in Preschool.

In a summer school class at a private school, the assignment for the 8th grade class was to write their memoirs. They had no idea where to begin, so I suggested they think of a special occasion or a favorite birthday or holiday? Oh, the ideas they chose!! My favorite was this humble, but very famous boy who wrote about The ESPYs. So I had to ask what in the World was he referring to? He asked me if I knew what they were..I said, "Yes, I sure do." He said he had a Goodie Bag from there - I said, "Wow! They were only on last night?!" He said his aunt and uncle were there, Beyoncé and Jay Z.

Just ask honest questions - it’s the best way to get honest answers.
It depends on the teacher; I would just talk to the few teachers you have issues and concerns with. If their personality doesn’t come off as “offering help”, try a tutor. Tutors don’t have the responsibilities teachers do. You’ll get someone’s undivided attention with a tutor.
