Aitken Math And Science Tutoring
About
I am a certified Math and Science teacher in the State of Texas with gifted and talented training (MS Math 4-8 and Life Science 7-12). I am also certified in Indiana (Life Science 5-12). I have taught 5 years in the middle school setting with many diverse learners (students with IEPs, 504 plans, and gifted and talented).
I use a lot of hands-on/manipulative learning and games with my students. With the COVID-19 outbreak, I have integrated my lessons online for my students to be able to continue their learning jouneys (platforms Canvas, Schoology, and Zoom).
I really enjoy working with my students and helping them find their ah-ha moment. I try to focus on finding their confidence in math and help them build a growth mindset.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know my students; find out what their interests might be. That way, I can gear my lessons to what my students may like. I would also like to give pre-tests to see where they are at so I can adjust lessons to their level or ability.

How did you get started teaching?
I volunteered at the middle school I went to during my college years with the band program. I help kids with holding their instruments, reading music, playing their instruments, and held small enesembles during break outs. I found a passion with working with students will I went to school for a Biology degree and decided to earn my masters in education right after I graduated with my bachelors in biology. From there, I was fully immersed with teaching 8th grade math full time with a co-teacher/mentor and have loved it since. It was the best and hardest decision of my life.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with an array of students. I have taught inclusion classes with students with IEPs and 504 plans, EL/ESL/ELL students, on-level classes, high ability classes, and gifted and talented students. I have also been located in charter schools and districts in urban settings where students and families come from poverty to one district where students and families were strong-middle class to affluent.
I have worked with students who may have suffered from mental illness due to situations in the past or present and have learned to be a listening ear.
