Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student I typically go over their goals as a learner. If a student would like to work on homework and specific skill attainment, we will work on that. If a student wants to get ahead in their math understanding, we will work on building foundational skills. If a student would like to work on preparing for the ACT, we will also do that.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a certified teacher in both Illinois and Tennessee. I have a degree in Special Education with a minor in mathematics. The degree I received taught me to understand struggling learners, and provide interventions that will help students succeed.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge by the hour, usually around $30 an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I am passionate about empowering the future generations. I am also passionate about mathematics. I love watching a student go from saying "I hate math, I am no good at it." To "Math is my favorite subject."
What types of students have you worked with?
I typically work with special education students. These students generally have a diagnosis of autism, dyslexia, learning delays, and cognitive delays. I also have experience working with the diagnosed gifted and talented population.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, I have been receiving mail from former students who are in college. These great students made a profound impact on me, and it is heartwarming to think I may have made an impact on them as well.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise students to look at their strengths, so we can make sure we build on their strengths.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think students talking to teachers about their needs is incredible. I would advise my students to really think about how they learn best. This can be visually, kinestetically, auditory, etc.
