Center For Skills And Knowledge
About
My philosophy is to determine where the student is in their learning and to meet them there and help them to get where they need to be by helping them to fill in those knowledge gaps. Learning is often more about practice and not being discouraged.
I believe that when people are struggling with a concept or a subject, it is usually just a matter of finding out where that hiccup is occurring. Give simple steps and help them to practice and generally people learn to master the areas they once struggled with. I also think teaching to mastery is the aim rather than teaching to misery. A friend of mine said that once to me and I knew that was the problem so many students face. It doesn't have to be that way.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I generally look at how the instructor is teaching to ensure we are working in tandem. Then I assess the areas that the person is struggling with and work through problems together. Practice is key to understanding.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a PhD in education and in IST
I was a Curriculum Manager writing curriculum for about 5 years at the adult level and I own my own business (Center for Skills and Knowledge) where I've taught children too. It's very helpful to understand the difference between the way children learn and the way adults learn, because it's very different. Understanding the difference is helpful to those being tutored. I've been teaching face-to-face and online for over 15 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Generally the going rate by hour but I also work with the family.
How did you get started teaching?
I stopped working in casework and other jobs in a service profession and went to school because I wanted to teach. But I've always loved helping people. Especially kids. I am currently working with my grandson as he attends his school online during COVID. He is high functioning autistic so I do spend a lot of time helping him with his individual needs.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with 6 year olds up to college students since I taught as a professor at several online universities including UOP, Kaplan, Art Institute, South University, Devry, and Bellevue University. I also have taught through my own Center for Skills and Knowledge.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Lately I haven't been too many places due to COVID limitations but I'm a huge Disney fan and I have 13 grandchildren, so I am anxious to get back to life and Disney!
