Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I start working with a new student I like to see what they already know on the topic. They usually know more than it seems. I also try and get to know them a little bit and see what I can relate the learning material to that they enjoy and will understand.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics and am currently working on my master's. I have tutored for several years, and am currently teaching an entry level college math course.
How did you get started teaching?
I started just helping my classmates with thier homework and studying for tests but then people in other classes started asking for my help as well. After that I had several students who who I was being paid to tutor. When I applied for graduate school I saw that they had a position open for a Graduate Teaching Assisstant and so I applied, now teaching math is one of my favorite things to do.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students in grades from kindergarten up through college level. Most of my students have started out not liking math at all, but i have shown them that math is very useful and can actually be fun.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would tell them that math can be taught in many ways, and some ways work better for certain people than others. They need to fnd a teacher that is willing to chnage up how they teach until they find how that specific student learns best.
