Equity Math Tutoring: building equity in yourself!
Equity Math Tutoring is a new and ever-growing group of math educators who want to help students excel in their learning. We believe that every student is capable of learning math and achieving progress. We do our best to create a positive learning environment for our students to thrive in by building rapport with our students, reinforcing progress & effort, and mastering fundamentals to make mental math easier and seemingly effortless! From improving grades & test scores to "catching up" to or even excelling their grade level: we not only help students improve upon their computational skills, but also their confidence in their own abilities as a mathematician.
Our teaching style is derived from the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice:

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I first discuss tutoring with the parent, I ask for details regarding what they are currently learning as well as any specific concerns that they have for the student both socially and mathematically. During the first session, I try to assist as I normally would in a session, while focusing more in creating a healthy atmopshere and discussion where the student is comfortable with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My base rate is $20/hr. If you prefer in-person tutoring, but the distance is more than 20 mi, then there would be an increase to account for the driving.
How did you get started teaching?
I love working with students and helping them grow in not just their math skills, but in their confidence as well. No one wants to feel like they're not good enough or smart enough, and I do my best to help make math make sense .
What types of students have you worked with?
I commonly work with students who do not like math as a subject. This is often due to the difficulty that comes with the subject and the sensation of feeling "stupid" and "frustrated" when solving the problem doesn't go so well.
I have also worked with students who have ADHD and get distracted easily as well as ones who suffer from mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
When working as a teacher assistant, there was a student who had a history of mental health issues and would occasionally out. One day during a quiz, her friend stormed off because of some issues at home. My student followed becasue she felt useless because she couldn't help her friend and wanted to look for her. She was noticably frantic and didn't want to go back to class, and since there were two other adults to administer the quiz I told her I would walk with her around the halls a bit to help her look. Through conversation I was able to successfuly calm her down, and once we found out that the friend was with the V.P., we returned to class. I asked her if she wanted to take the quiz then or come by after school since she would only have 1/3 of the time as to complete it compared to the other students. She said she would just take it and proceeded to do well on it. She still made a couple mistakes, but it was one of her best quiz grades in the three years she was my mentor's student.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be as specific as you can. From my personal experience looking for tutoring work online, people will often just post job descriptions like "Looking for a Math Tutor" or "My son needs help with math." These don't tell me anything aside from the subject. Even if you state what grade you are in "Looking for 8th Grade Math Tutor" or what particuilar subject you need help with "Need help with Trigonometry" will be an immense help. Math tutors can tutor various concepts but sometimes specialize in a particular few. Tutoring a 5th grader also looks completely different from tutoring an 11th grader.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Instead of just saying "I need help" try to be as specific as you can. For example, what do you notice about what your struggling with? If its the setting, are there too many distractions? Is it too loud or quiet? For mathematic concepts, are you okay with the algebra but struggle in setting up the inital equation? Can you reach the answer easily but have trouble simplifying it? If you have a good teacher, they will try to identify what you are specifically struggling with as well, but providing some of that information can help them help you.
Also, it's okay to ask them to repeat something or explain something in a different way to you. It is their job, and if they didn't want to, then they would be in a different field. As a teacher, I want my students to succeed and to feel comfortable talking to me if there is something I can do to help them do so.
