About

Hello! My name is Ms. W and I'm currently a language arts teacher. I've taught middle school English Language Arts and Writing for many years in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

I've taught reading, literature, writing, and grammar during these years to more than 1,500 students in a very diverse school. My school's diversity includes students of varying abilities, as well as varied cultures. I love all aspects of a Language Arts classroom and try to find interesting ways of relating information to my students.

My favorite thing about my subject is reading and teaching literature. Looking at different pieces of text and digging into them to find the hidden meaning and make connections has always been fun.

I love being able to help students really understand a what they are reading and how it connects to the world around them.

    Frequently asked questions

To begin, I'd want to know exactly what the student was hoping to gain by working together. I'd also begin by asking if a student was requesting help with a specific skill or a specific task. If help is requested for a skill, I'd begin by assessing their current levels of understanding / mastery. If the assistance requested is more for a task, I'd begin by dissecting the task with the student to make sure we both understand what the end product would be.

I've always loved school and learning, even in elementary school.  In college, I chose a teaching path in order to help other students have the chance to learn how to enjoy school as well.

I have worked with a variety of students in my classes.  I've taught gifted students, students with IEPs, English as Second Language students, etc.

Find someone who is patient and who will try to explain/teach things in a variety of ways.

What does a successful tutoring session look like to you? Am I looking for help with an assignment or a specific skill? How will I know if I'm progressing?
