Hello! My name is Brooke, and I am a New York based Writing, Grammar, and English tutor. I have experience with first graders through college students, and love helping students realize their potential. I can help with anything from grammar basics to fiction writing to college application materials. 

I am incredibly passionate about helping others find uncover their potential and watching them flourish. I am a firm believer in the immense capability of the individual and am dedicated to finding that. Everybody operates differently, learns differently, and creates differently. Tutoring allows me to discover those specifics and help students grow both as students and as individuals.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

This is very dependant on the student and the type of tutoring that we are working through. In writing, I like to have access to the work ahead of time so that I can study and make notes. In the session, I will have the student read their work aloud so that they can hear their words. Then I discuss my notes and we rework the piece together. 

For younger students it is moreso about guiding them to the answers themselves, rather than giving them answers. My tutoring style is meant to empower students to come to their own conclusions. 

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

English, grammar, and writing have always had a special place in my heart. I was the frustratingly annoying student who used to ask teachers to assign essays in school. My undergraduate degree is in Acting with a Playwriting minor and I am currently pursuing my MFA in Dramatic Writing at New York University. I have experience leading study halls for children and tutoring elementary school students in English. I have participated and led writing workshops, for both fiction and academimc writing. I have experience as a freelance dramaturg where I researched and synthesized my findings into reports for writers, producers, directors, and actors. As a dramaturg, a lot of my work was also in guiding writers through their process and helping them find the soul of their story. I also have experience in tutoring college-aged students in academic writing.
