Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I like to have a conversation about how their math class is currently going. What seems to work well and what do they seem to struggle with and then proceed from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BS in mathematics, education minor
MS in education leadership with a math emphasis
How did you get started teaching?
Math has always come easy to me, but I noticed that it didn´t always for my friends. So I wanted to help them and they would most often say that they understood it when I explained it better than when the teacher did. I always thought, why isn´t the teacher explaining it more than one for more people to understand.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have seen a variety of students over my 15 years as an educator; 7 through 12 grade; lower performing to great math minds.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am fond of switching my 8th grade classroom to a standards based classroom where students get multiple attempts to show proficiency because everyone learns at different speeds and sometimes it doesn´t click until the 3rd attempt at something (with me helping them every step of the way to help them succeed and finally have some success in a math classroom that they maybe never had before). That is what teaching is all about.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
I am a firm believer that everyone learns at different speeds. And you just haven´t learned it YET. With time, effort, and some extra help anything is possible!
